Can She Come Up to Your Kolkata Hotel Room? — What the Front Desk May Ask, and How We Plan Around It
Yes. Most hotels in Kolkata allow a visitor up to a guest’s room. But each hotel writes its own rules, and the clerk at the desk follows those, not ours. A quick check before you book saves her a wasted trip and saves you an awkward moment.

Each hotel sets its own visitor rule
In India every hotel guest who sleeps there must show an ID card at check-in. A visitor who comes up for a short while is another matter, and here each hotel has its own way. At some desks she shows her ID and signs a register. At others visitors may go up only until a set hour. A few business hotels in Salt Lake and New Town keep all visitors out of the rooms, while most older hotels around Park Street and Esplanade are easy about it.
Asking is the fastest way to know. Ring the desk from the phone in your room: may a visitor come up, and till what hour? Or look at the hotel’s rules on the app you booked with. Then tell us the answer when you call.

Flats and service apartments are easier
For a rented flat or a service apartment, the building makes the rule, not a hotel desk. Most guards just want a name. Send us the tower, your flat number and which gate she should come in by, and warn the guard: a guest is due. Where the gate has a visitor book, she signs it like anyone else.

What we do once you have told us the hotel
We pass on to her the hotel, your room and the rule you found. She carries her own ID card for desks that ask for it. If the hotel stops visitors at midnight, we suggest a length that ends before then, or a private room instead. If your lift needs a key card, come down to the lobby when we say she is close, and go up together.
Not a rupee is paid till she reaches you. A hotel booking costs what it costs anywhere else in Kolkata, and her ride is free within the city, Howrah, New Town and Salt Lake.

Will the hotel staff know why she is there?
They see a visitor for a guest, nothing more. She dresses for a hotel lobby and goes up with you or to your room number.
May I call her a friend at the desk?
You can say what you like to the desk, but never break a written hotel rule. If visitors are not allowed, book a private room through us.
What if the desk stops her at the door?
Call us at once. If the hotel will not let her up, we move the booking to a private room the same evening.
